It is with great sadness that the club has learned of the death of Roly Melrose. Roly, who was 84, was a proud Geordie who became a much respected captain of the club’s lower teams and also served on the club committee. He died peacefully on February 9th.
Past Pesident Steve Uglow writes: “What Roly’s rugby background was before he came to Canterbury in the 1970s is a mystery to me but I have a feeling that his best rugby years were probably behind him. But he loved the game and showed a natural aptitude and understanding and was a much loved captain of our 4th XV for several seasons, organising it successfully despite the Friday night depredations as the senior skippers raided his ranks. But even in those days, the flesh was becoming weaker - one abiding memory of Roly was how much time was spent before the game in swaddling every muscle and joint in bandaging and padding!
He was a great Canterbury servant, a wise voice in committee and he will be much missed by all those he played and/or drank with him."
