With the city side battling for second place in the final Dragon Fire league standings they needed to finish the season with a win.  Three tries in the first seven minutes gave them a flying start but they made the mistake of taking their foot of the accelerator and Maidstone began to claw their way back into the match. At the break, although they were still trailing, they had points on the board and a second half that would see them playing down the slope.
In what became a somewhat fractious affair, the penalty count rose sharply against Canterbury and it was Maidstone who gained the upper hand. Two tries in quick succession gave the visiting team momentum and they crossed the line agauin with the last play of the match. At the end of a tough encounter it was only the missed conversion that separated the sides, with Canterbury just managing to hang on.
