Match Report

                       CANTERBURY PILGRIMS 36 REDINGENSIANS 2ND 26

Sitting on a 24 point lead in the second half Pilgrims let it slip alarmingly  until a late try settled this entertaining clash.  Redingensians cut the margin to only three points before Ed Elson dashed away to ensure the city side hung on to third spot in the Zoo League.  The game was a battle between the visitors dominant pack and a talented Canterbury back division who accounted for all of their five tries.  By half time Pilgrims were 15-5 ahead through scores from Jon Gallagher and Kieran Thompson, with Will Hilton adding a penalty goal and a conversion. Redingensians took advantage of a bad handling error to score a breakaway try.    The Pilgrims forwards were under heavy pressure at the set scrums but in the wider areas the city side were in charge and early in the second half Thompson, making his first appearance for eight weeks after recovering from injury, claimed his second touch down.  More good work, involving new signing David Bailey and scrum half Jack Weave, led to Guy Hilton registering Pilgrims fourth try and with brother Will’s two conversions the job might have seemed done.  Redingensians, however, had other ideas,  Canterbury errors played a big part in allowing them to storm back with three tries, all converted, and at 29-26 the result was wide open.   But Pilgrims found their way home through Elson’s late effort and Hilton’s fourth successful conversion.
