East Kent has lost one its great rugby men with the death of John Carley on November 28th. He was one of the best referees of his era, went on to become a hugely respected President of the Kent RFU and, together with our own late President Pat Smalley, was instrumental in founding and establishing the East Kent local leagues. The format was so effective that it was rolled out nationally. John’s is a rugby family, with son Malcolm playing for Dover and Betteshanger, his father’s old club, and grandson Matthew now one of England’s top referees. John’s funeral will be at Barham Crematorium on Tuesday, December 18th at 12.40pm.
