Pilgrims fell to their first Zoo League home defeat of the season against a well drilled Bury outfit who gradually took command. There was little to choose between the sides in the first 20 minutes but missed tackles allowed the visitors to steal into the lead with an unconverted try and the same defensive flaws saw Canterbury concede a second score before half time. Their first points came from a Will Hilton penalty goal but with the Bury midfield backs making the right impression they grabbed a third try. Pilgrims used the replacements bench to try and boost their morale but could not prevent Bury stretching the gap to 19 points with an converted try.
Despite the disruption caused by a couple of injuries Pilgrims hit back and an excellent passage of play brought a try for Ross Howard, converted by Hilton, and the city side were again in the hunt. Bury then scored the try of the game with a superb cross field kick, taken in his stride by the chasing back which, with the conversion, put the game beyond Canterbury’s reach. They fought until the end, with Callum Watson always prominent, but the earlier damage was beyond repair.
