Sunday brought a sunny autumn afternoon and a firm pitch, perfect for the open style of rugby the Ladies like to play. A confident and aggressive opening 10 minutes with strong carries from Liz Spruin and Lydia Beard shocked the opposition into a few mistakes, but to their credit their defence held solid and the ladies were unable to capitalise. This was until 15 minutes in when Kate Lawrence wriggled through from a 10/12 switch shrugging off two players she was then able to fling the ball wide to Layla Little in support who turned on the gas to finish under the posts.
The second try of the game came shortly after, when Charlotte Daniel was able to finish in the corner following some quick hands from the backs. Under the instruction of coach Alex, the girls worked hard in defensive breakdowns with vital turnovers from Olivia Haywood and Emma Alleyne. It was then the turn of Vanisha Patel to touch down in the opposite corner following a strong 5m scrum from the forwards with new number 8 Meg West controlling the ball well at the base allowing a solid platform for the backs to float the ball out to the wing. Just before half time, the Ladies found themselves absorbing some pressure within 5m of their own try line. The cool under pressure aura from fly half Charlie Barter was channelled down the back line as they handled the ball superbly until Kate Lawrence was able to clear. The kick was wonderfully gathered by Vanisha who then popped inside to the chasing Kate who in turn had scrum half Charlotte Andrews in support. With another well timed pass, there was no stopping Charlotte who finished under the posts for a real end to end try.
Layla Little added the final two tries of the day, assisted both times by centre partner Kate Lawrence, to bag herself a hat-rick. A fantastic display of rugby, played in great spirits with both teams a credit to the game.
