CANTERBURY PILGRIMS 21 TAUNTON 2ND 29
Pilgrims paid the price for missed tackles against direct running visitors who established an early lead they never surrendered and held on to thwart a second half comeback by Canterbury. After a promising start, the city side found themselves twelve points down in the first fifteen minutes. Both Taunton tries, one converted, were the result of that defensive frailty. It took a bulldozing effort from prop Elliot White and a conversion from Will Hilton to get Pilgrims back on track. Before half time that was cancelled out by a third Taunton try, once again the tacklers failing to do their job, and they stretched further ahead with another touch down early in the second half. Then came Pilgrims much needed revival and as the closing staged approached the visitors lead had been cut to a single point. Good work by wing Charlie Grimes created a try for debutant Ben Neville and that was followed by a great score for Alex Meads. Scrum half Jack Weaver’s 50 metre dash set it up and the excellent White slipped the ball to Meads who made a diagonal run to the line. Hilton converted both tries from wide out as Canterbury looked to complete their comeback. It was Taunton, however, who sealed a narrow victory with a try in the final minute of the game.
