Canterbury Pilgrims 17 Westcombe Park 2nd 12
Pilgrims overcame a spate of injuries and a powerful ‘Combe pack to win this Invicta Division One game with a late try, Had they taken their chances it could have been a more comfortable ride for Canterbury but their hands let them down at crucial moments and they found themselves behind on the scoreboard in the last five minutes. Injuries deprived them of four key men during the game, the most serious being a leg fracture for Number Eight Ross Comfort. They opened up a ten point lead with a try from Ben Nash, Kyan Braithwaite adding the conversion and then a penalty goal. ‘Combe struck back with a converted try just before half time and after the break denied Canterbury’s dangerous back division possession with some controlled forward play. A yellow card for Alex Miller gave the visitors their chance and they took the lead with an unconverted try from close quarters. On his return, Miller made up for lost time with a decisive break but his pass was badly spilled and Pilgrims hopes seemed to have gone. However, Nash pulled the game out of the fire with his second try which Braithwaite converted and the city club’s obstinate defence survived a last surge from ‘Combe to keep them top of the league table.
