The elements were always going to have a bearing on the game but it was a powerful last 20 minutes by Canterbury that finally settled the outcome. Playing with the strong wind in the first half they did not make full use of it and only led 17-10 at the break.
Deal drew level and then eased ahead as they coped well with the conditions. Then came that decisive last quarter.
Strong runs from Ian Hodges and Gareth Thomas combined with delicate touches in the midfield unlocked three more tries for Canterbury before the end.
