With Pilgrims leading this Zoo League game by a single point at half time there was little to suggest that they would run out convincing winners. Six second half tries then blew Shelford away as Canterbury overcame the difficult conditions and romped to a victory that took them to fourth place in the league table. A great move involving Joe Craig and Harry Dance gave them a good start as Cameron Townley finished off with the try and Will Hilton converted. But in the strong wind Shelford hit back with a converted try and two penalty goals before Piers Richardson picked up, ran 80 metres for a touchdown to leave Hilton an easy kick to put Pilgrims just ahead.
As a contest though the game was heading only one way when the outstanding Callum Watson scored from a lineout immediately after the break. A second try quickly followed. The ball was moved wide where Chris Butler went over and Pilgrims were in charge. Canterbury’s fifth try was scored by Hilton before Shelford responded briefly to make 33-18. But Pilgims made light of injuries to Tom Little and Ben Nash as they sailed to victory. Skipper Dance crossed twice, Ross Howard made the most of a quick tap penalty and Hilton added another three conversions to complete a good day’s work
