A hat-trick of tries by Kieron Thompson was not enough to stop Pilgrims suffering their first league defeat of the season away to Tonbridge Judd’s. An under strength side travelled to Tonbridge for a very tough Invicta League game at the weekend.
Within 3 minutes Judd’s ran through the middle of the pilgrims defence to lead 7-0, 6 minutes later the visitors lost Ed Oram with a leg injury, Ross Howard came on, a good move and the ball played out wide allowed Kieron Thompson to score the first of his three tries, Alex Miller missed the conversion, but soon after kicked a penalty to give the visitors an 7-8 lead.
Judd’s then mounted pressure which forced Freddie Edwards to commit a foul, a yellow card followed, and the Home side scored two tries while he was in the sin bin! 19-8. Just before half–time Alex Miller scored from a penalty, and at Half-time an 11-19 deficit seemed surmountable.
The second half did not start well for the visitors, Judd’s scored from yet another penalty given away by the pilgrims, from the half-way line 11-22. Then another fight back and Thompson’s second try, a 50 yards kick and chase, with a great pick up, unconverted, 16-22 and the game was set up for a finale.
But Canterbury then messed up again! The home side ran in a try without a tackle being a made, 16-29. Stanley Willet made his debut, and made a few really good tackles, but another penalty, and Judds were 16-32 ahead. A third try for Thompson and the scored looked respectable at 21-32. Judd’s then missed another Penalty!! The pilgrims must learn not to be so generous! A big thank you to Joseph Turner who filled in at second row on Saturday morning, and had a good game.
This coming Saturday Old Albanians visit The Marine Travel ground. This will be a keenly contested game, well worth a watch.
