Match Report. 31.10.26
Snowdon 1st V Canterbury 5th
Canterbury5th 17 pts Snowdon1st 25 pts.
Canterbury Zingari just came up short against a youthful well drilled Snowdon side. This was a game of fierce commitment shown by both sides with the Canterbury backs dictating the play out wide with Snowdon using their heavier forward pack to snuff out any Canterbury advance through the middle. However, this didn’t stop the Zingari backs making ground and with some accurate kicking had Snowdon pinned in their own half. It was not long before Canterbury took advantage getting the ball wide to Rob Horan who twisted his way through to ground the ball out wide. First blood to the Zingari but Snowdon’s reaction to this set back was swift using their forwards winning a scrum inside the Canterbury twenty-two split the defence to go level. The pattern had been set the city backs looked the most dangerous out wide but Snowdon commanded the scrum using it to good effect. First winning and taking a quick penalty caught Canterbury off guard to drive over the line for a converted try putting them in front for the first time. With game going into stoppage time the city put in a final effort getting the ball out to the backs this time for Brad Alchurch to split the defence and crash over, and with Rob Horan conversion all was level at halftime.
The second half started with Canterbury giving away an early penalty that Snowdon took quickly exploiting a disorganized defence that allowed Snowdon to touch down, and with the conversion regain the lead. Snowdon now with the upper hand reverted to using their heavier pack with some success to deny the Zingari quality possession and with that the penalty count started to mount along with a growing injury list as the Zingari went through their bench replacements. Now down to fourteen men they conceded another penalty that Snowdon converted into points extending their lead. Still the city side came back well into injury time with Charlie Flynn finishing off out wide to reduce the deficit. Still in contention, and with over twelve minutes of injury time played Canterbury came offside at a ruck for Snowdon to slot a final penalty putting them out of sight in this exciting hard-fought contest.
