Pups camp

Training our rugby future

We had over 50 children join us at Merton Lane on Tuesday and Wednesday (30th – 31st August) on what was a brilliant camp for all. 1st XV players; Cam Murray, Jesse De Vries, Tommy Williams, Jamie Stephens, and Nathan Morris were joined by Canterbury Women’s 1st XV player Freddie who led 3 groups of enthusiastic young players. The players focused on the key principles of; attack, defence, and transition whilst creating a mnemonic to represent the values they feel underpin rugby union.

The winning mnemonic of Rugby was fostered as the camp’s mottos. Respect, Understanding, Guidance, Belief, and “Yellow and black” (to represent CRFC).

On the last day, we had a “World’s Strongest Group” challenge where each participant; ran a bronco, competed in body weight exercises, threw the rugby ball as far as they could, and took part in tyre flipping/carrying challenges. Wales came out victorious with Scotland close runners up.

The final event of the camp was the Rugby Festival where all players from Y6-Y10 were evenly split into groups and competed in a mini World Cup. Cam Murray kept up the Scottish tradition of coaching his country to the wooden spoon with 0 victories and 3 defeats. Wales came out with the Grand Slam completing a clean sweep and led valiantly by coach Freddie.

Our award ceremony saw 4 good eggs awarded.

Bat & Trap

Inaugural bat & trap tournament success

This Monday Bank Holiday, Canterbury Rugby Club was delighted to host an inaugural bat & trap tournament organised by Verum Financial with sponsors Shepherd Neame and Burgess Hodgson,  to raise funds for the Kent  MS Therapy Centre. Attended by over 300 people in the glorious sunshine, teams were entered to play for the tournament cup and fiercely contested the prize. Attendees enjoyed good food, good beer, and good(ish) sportsmanship.

The winning team, Clivey’s Ancient, took the spoils on the day, knocking out the Bat and Trap Committee, then beating The Handsome Brewers. Thank you to all who attended and a thank you to all those involved in organising the day. From the extremely positive feedback we have already received, it certainly looks like an annual competition to add to our diaries.

Organisers Verum said of the day –

“We were delighted to support KMSTC with organising this fantastic tournament and overwhelmed by the number of teams who elected to take part in this inaugural event

The added benefit of strong relations with Canterbury Rugby Club, and their willingness to be involved, certainly assisted with the overall success!

So much fun was had.  We will now learn from our experiences gained, put this knowledge to good use and endeavour to create a popular yearly fundraising event promoting both a unique local ‘pub’ game and worthy charity.”

Spencer Goddard, CEO of Kent MS Therapy Centre, said –

“Thank you to all of those that attended the inaugural Bat & Trap Tournament held to support our Charity. It was great to meet so many people and share our charities perspective and the work we are carrying out. The event allowed us to raise our profile and funds to support people living with MS in Kent. We would like to thank Verum Financial, particularly Matt Pitchacaren and Matt Carr, and in addition the fantastic Shepherd Neame and Burgess Hodgson for sponsoring the event. We look forward to the continuing development of a working relationship between Kent MS Therapy Centre and Canterbury Rugby Club and the opportunities created for us both.”

Giles Hilton, Chairman of Canterbury Rugby Club commented –

“CRFC were delighted to have been involved in a community event supporting KMSTC. Goes a long way to show that we’re not just a single sport Club and that we join happily with our Partners”

Owen West

Let us marvel at this superhero challenge

Owen West, 19, is refusing to let the spinal condition that has made him wheelchair-bound from holding him back. A keen sportsman, Owen plays wheelchair rugby for the Canterbury Hellfires and wheelchair basketball for the Folkstone Arrows. He is now going to have to muster all of his ability in captaining a team of 60 participants from across the UK to take part in a virtual summer challenge. It team member has a disability of some sort and have accepted the challenge of collectively traveling the equivalent of the circumference of the world in any way they can, be it in a wheelchair or using a walking frame. To be clear and to illustrate the scale of what they have taken on, the distance they will travel will be more than 46,000km. They have until August 20th to complete the task, with each participant logging progress daily. One of four teams taking part, Owen is leading the Captain America team, with his pet cat Oriel on his lap as his sidekick.

Every day, Owen is out on the street in his Captain America costume, putting in the distance. Should the weather get too hot, he even has a contingency having worked out that 136 laps of his living room equals 1km.

At the age of 15, Owen discovered he suffered from 3 rare genetic disorders – type 3 Loeys-Dietz syndrome, KBG Syndrome and CDK13. Because of these, he is unable to walk, has learning difficulties, is losing his eye-sight, and is often in pain. His mum Shelley West, though, is proud of her son for never complaining and never letting himself be beaten.

Through the challenge, Owen hopes to raise funds for Whizz-Kidz and Freedom for wheels. Both of whom have supported him in the difficult times he has had.

New player signings

New signings announced

The club has added a combination of experience, power and youth to the senior squad in the build-up to the 2022/23 rugby season. Three major signings, hooker Nathan Morris, lock Dave Irvine and back row player Cameron Murray, have been announced. Former England Under 20s player Morris, who joins from Blackheath, has top-class experience at Wasps and London Welsh. He will also take on a new role as the club’s Head of Player Pathway. Dave Irvine returns to The Marine Travel Ground full-time after a brief loan spell with Canterbury last season when he was with Tonbridge Juddians. Young Scot Cameron Murray arrives fresh from training with a leading rugby academy in South Africa and has developed with Glasgow Warriors Under18s.

Welcoming the new trio Head Coach Matt Corker said: “ Being able to bring in a player of Nathan’s calibre is great for the squad. His experience will help us improve and having been lucky enough to play with him many times it is exciting to bring in such a great character.

“Dave Irvine, who has played 110 National One and National Two games, made a great impression during his brief spell with us last season and has fitted into the squad right where he left off.”  Of Cameron Murray Corker says: “He is a physical back row player and has come to Canterbury to develop his game even further. His aspiration is to become the best player he can be.”

The bulk of last season’s squad have also committed themselves to the new campaign but there will be notable absentees following the retirement of centre Sam Sterling and versatile hooker/flanker Tristan King. Another disappointment is the gap left by last season’s top points scorer Kyan Braithwaite, who has undergone knee surgery, while wing Dwayne Corcoran is taking a break from rugby.

Canterbury, who have been in full training since last month, will play in the new National Division Two East which starts in September. The club begins its preparation for the league challenges with a home-friendly match against National One Bishop’ Stortford on Friday, August 12th.

GBWR 3v3 League: Tournament One

On June 18, at Stoke Mandeville stadium, Canterbury Hellfire burst back into action after an extended break including, and surrounding, the COVID-19 pandemic by participating in the newest format of wheelchair rugby – 3v3.

The focus of this 3v3 format is to encourage low-point players to have to carry the ball and play a different part of the game to that which they are accustomed.

This was the first of three tournaments which make up this league, and the results were phenomenal for the Canterbury side: four wins, one loss.

They opened the day’s play with a maximum score of 25 to defeat Stoke Mandeville Maulers WRC, and the same pace carried to the second game winning 14 – 2 over Mavericks.

The third match of the day was close, being brought into overtime by a try scored by Canterbury with 0.2 seconds still showing on the clock, and possession for the restart in the hands of the black & amber, giving a third win to the Canterbury side.

Fourth up were Ospreys WRC who played well and made sure to give their all against the starting-to-tire Canterbury side, but were no match for the expertise of Canterbury and were eventually beaten 23 – 16.

Finally, after a day of double duty for all three Canterbury players playing both 3s and 5s, the fatigue set in and the only other team to be as-yet-undefeated was last up – West Country Hawks WRC. Going into the game both teams were unbeaten, both teams had won with a maximum score, however that closeness in performance to that point would have to be broken: there would have to be a winner; and that winner was Hawks.

All teams involved in the 3s tournament provided an excellent atmosphere and enjoyed the experience of something new, and we would like to thank all our opposition for travelling from all over Great Britain and providing a great day of rugby.

Thank you to our players for representing Canterbury so strongly, sports is largely decided by performance on the day and the performance delivered was the standard we all strive to throughout Canterbury Rugby Club.

Teams in the league are:

Canterbury Hellfire WRC
Mavericks
Ospreys WRC
Stoke Mandeville Maulers WRC
Team Solent Sharks
West Country Hawks WRC

A big thank you to our staff, volunteers and partners

It has been an extremely busy time at Marine Travel Ground with two hugely successful events on consecutive days, the Mark 22 Ball on Friday 10th, and the Barretts Ball on Saturday 11th June. With nearly 1000 guests across the two nights, we would not have been able to achieve them without the mammoth efforts of our staff and volunteers who worked tirelessly in the background to ensure all was correctly set up and in place to welcome revellers and give them the best possible experience. The club would like to take the time to acknowledge and applaud them. Thank you all for the work, effort,  and expertise you put into making these events possible.

We would also like to thank our partners:

Maypole Marquees, for assembling an excellent venue for two fantastic nights;

1st Setting, for supplying all the crockery and cutlery we could ever desire;

Saucy Flo’s for catering such a quantity two nights on the bounce;

Paladin Innovations for assembling a fantastic lighting rig, a booming sound system, and making sure the party would go long into the night;

Temptationtowers for the selfie mirror, giving us hilarious memories of the two events;

Max Shand and Team for being on-site both nights to provide confidence, security, and safety to all there.

Pride Canterbury

Pride 2022

Canterbury Rugby Club are proud to be sponsors of  Pride Canterbury this year. Seeking diversity in unity is a must so as a collective we can benefit from the best of what we all have to offer. Respect for one another is a tenet that we advocate not only on the pitch, but also off it, and within the many communities of which we are a part. This is something we teach our mini and youth, all the way through to our senior players.

Though recent times have been challenging for many, we have seen people come together in a way that we have not seen in such a long time. Public opinion and sentiment are changing for the better. There is, however, still much to do and we at Canterbury Rugby Club will continue striving to keep finding ways to move forward in a positive and inclusive manner.
