24/25 1st XV fixtures

The fixtures for the 1st XV National League 2 East fixtures are out. It looks to be a tough season with 3 new teams joining the fray.

Message from the RFU

As National League Rugby have only four leagues to organise fixtures, they can be completed earlier than the other divisions (Regional 1 and below). The plan is to release fixtures for these leagues by the 14th June. This will include those for any other sides which you have playing in RFU Leagues. All will be viewable on the Fixtures and Results section of the RFU web site.

Ride, Walk, Fundraise

We are once again the starting point to the annual Canterbury Bike Ride and there will be a choice of routes provisionally 21, 55 and 76 miles long. The routes leave the rugby club and head south through the Kent Downs AONB, east to Dover Castle and along the top of the White Cliffs (with a potential view of France if the weather is kind), before heading back via Betteshanger Park, Eastry, Adisham and Bridge. The weekend will feature a new walking event called Walk Canterbury with various routes taking in historic Canterbury and the surrounding Kent countryside.

As an entrant to the Canterbury Bike Ride you benefit from:

  • A choice of 3 fully marked routes with a backup route map and GPS files
  • Feed stations on the long and medium routes
  • On-course first aid and mechanical support
  • A medal and a hot meal at the end of your ride
  • Free event parking

New for 2024 the Canterbury Bike Ride weekend will include the Walk Canterbury event. Three routes, approximately 5, 12 & 16 miles long, will take in historic Canterbury and the Kent countryside.

All of the Walk Canterbury routes leave the rugby club and head for the City centre where walkers will be able to visit Canterbury Cathedral – the Mother Church of the worldwide Anglican Communion, seat of the Archbishop of Canterbury, UNESCO World Heritage Site, and resting place of royalty and saints. The short route heads back to the rugby club via St Augustine’s Abbey. The medium route passes St Austine’s and turns North East at St Martin’s Church (completing the trio of Canterbury’s UNESCO World Heritage sites), following the Stour Valley Way and Augustine Camino Way to Fordwich. From here the route heads south before picking up the Elham Valley Way and returning to the Rugby Club. The long route follows the same path but continues east at Fordwich along the Stour Valley Way as far as Stodmarsh, before heading south on Augustine Camino via Wickhambreaux, Littlebourne and Patrixbourne before picking up the Elham Valley Way and returning to the Rugby Club.

All of the Walk Canterbury participants will be provided with a route map containing information on local history and all walkers will receive a medal and food at the end of the walk.

Join us Sunday 21st July!

Three League Newcomers

The old season may still be fresh in the memory but the 2024/25 campaign is already taking shape with three new names in the mix. Havant, Colchester and Oxford Quins have been promoted to National 2 East while North Walsham and Wimbledon are relegated to Regional 1 level. For Hampshire club Havant it is a return to national competition after a number of seasons absence, but for Colchester and Oxford Quins it will be a fresh experience. As champions of Midlands Regional 1 the Quins would normally have been assigned to National 2 West but with two West Country sides, Cinderford and Taunton, relegated from National One they have been transferred East. The league fixture list for next season is expected to be published by June 14th.

KENT CALL UP FIVE

BACKS IN DEMAND
Five Canterbury players, including four of the back division, have been named in the Kent senior men’s squad who begin their defence of the English County Championship title against Hampshire at Havant rugby club on Saturday, May 18th.  There are first time call-ups for backs Will Waddington, Garry Jones, Presley Farrance and prop forward Cameron Macmillan. Joining them is wing Alfie Orris who was a member of the Kent side which defeated Lancashire at Twickenham in last season’s final.  Other Canterbury players who were part of that title winning side, the captain Jamie Stephens, Frank Reynolds and Danny Herriott, are taking a break from rugby after a long league season, while Tom Williams and Dave Irvine are ruled out through injury.   After the visit to Hampshire, Kent are at home to Cornwall on May 25th and Surrey on June 1st with both games played at Charlton Park Rugby Club. The Cornwall match kicks off at 2pm and the two other games at 3pm.
