Scores roundup

Barnes 45 – 35 1st XV: A stunning second-half comeback saw Canterbury salvage pride and a crucial losing bonus point against second-placed Barnes, despite a torrid first half. Trailing 40-0 at the break, the city side roared back with five unanswered tries, proving their resilience.

Barnes dominated the opening 40 minutes, punishing Canterbury’s errors and running in six tries, with Elliot Haydon and Ethan Sikorski among the scorers. However, a rousing half-time talk from Head Coach Matt Corker sparked a remarkable response. Eoin O’Donoghue crossed early in the second half before Olly Frostick, Presley Farrance, Jesse de Vries, and Aaron Cooper all added to the tally. Frank Reynolds converted all five second-half tries, securing a valuable bonus point.

Despite the defeat, Canterbury remain fourth in National 2 East and will take confidence from their spirited fightback as they prepare for the next challenge.

Pilgrims 43 – 19 Dover: Pilgrims maintained their grip on Counties 1 with a commanding 45-19 victory over Dover in a thrilling local derby. Playing up the slope in the first half, they wasted no time imposing their game, with Gus Lister racing away for the opener after a strong break from Guy Hilton. Harry Sloan and Isaac Divine followed with well-taken tries before Adrian Geddes secured the bonus point, giving Canterbury a 24-0 lead.

Dover responded with two late first-half tries, closing the gap to 24-14 at the break. They carried their momentum into the second half, adding another to narrow the deficit to five points. However, Pilgrims hit back hard, with returning centre Tom Halliday making an immediate impact before Lister completed a superb hat-trick. Sonny Trew-Neville put the finishing touch on a solid team performance, keeping Pilgrims top of the table with three games to go.

Next up, on the road to Heathfield & Waldron as Pilgrims continue their push for the title.

Cliffe Crusaders 22 – 27 Canons: The Canons moved a step closer to the Counties 4 Kent title with a hard-earned victory away at Cliffe Crusaders. Using their pace and agility to counter Cliffe’s physicality, the Canons took control early, with Liam Browne slotting two penalties before Jake Upward crossed for the first try, set up by Josh Lamb. Lamb then added a second just before half-time, giving Canterbury a 20-3 lead at the break.

Cliffe responded strongly in the second half with an early try, and tensions rose as the game turned scrappy. However, the Canons struck back, with Browne’s chip-and-chase setting up Upward for his second. Despite Cliffe adding two late tries, the Canons secured a well-deserved four points against tough opposition.

All focus now turns to this weekend’s top-of-the-table showdown against Old Williamsonians, where the Canons will be out for revenge and looking to take a huge step towards the title.

Zingari 33 – 14 Gillingham 2nds: The Zingari continued their winning streak with an explosive second-half performance, dismantling top-of-the-table Anchorians in emphatic fashion.

A cautious first half saw both sides struggle for control, with Patrick Collins opening the scoring for Canterbury before Anchorians hit back to level things at the break. However, whatever was said at half-time worked wonders, as the Zingari emerged fired up.

Early pressure saw Connor Langley cross under the posts, quickly followed by a Callium Townshend try to stretch the lead. Anchorians attempted a response but were shut down by relentless defence. The Canterbury forwards dominated the turnover battle, allowing the backs to carve open the opposition defence.

As pressure mounted, Ash Nwapa powered over for a brace of tries, both converted by Jacob Coffin, sealing an unassailable lead. Anchorians grabbed a late consolation, but the Zingari’s second-half dominance ensured a statement victory.

Thank you for your continued support, and we look forward to another exciting year of rugby action!

Around the Ground

Around the Ground at the MTG

It’s been another action-packed week of battles, victories and honours for Canterbury Rugby Club, with thrilling matches, hard-fought battles, and well-deserved county call-ups. Canterbury Women secured a dramatic 22-20 victory over Jersey, clinching the win with a last-kick penalty in a fiercely contested encounter. Meanwhile, the Colts Tigers showed immense resilience against Westcliff, battling on with just 13 players before fatigue saw the hosts pull away in the final stages. The Colts Dragons faced a tough challenge against Tonbridge, gaining valuable experience as they prepare for next season.

On the junior front, the U15s delivered a dominant 31-10 victory over Sevenoaks, showcasing their defensive resilience and attacking flair despite being down to 14 men for part of the match.

Beyond the pitch, Canterbury continues to shine, with three Pilgrims players selected for the Kent U20s squad and six Canterbury Women’s players earning a place in the Kent 2025 squad. The Archbishop’s & CRFC Rugby Academy Girls also made history, competing for the first time in the Kent 7s and finishing a very impressive third.

Looking ahead, the Pilgrims take on Dover at home this Saturday – and what better way to kick things off than with one of Saucy Flo’s famous curries? Join us for pre-match dining and a top-of-the-table clash!

Scores roundup

Jersey Women 20 – 22 Canterbury Women: Canterbury Women made the trip to Jersey for a fiercely contested clash against Jersey Women. The match was a close affair from start to finish, with both teams keeping the scoreboard ticking. Jersey held a narrow lead at half-time, but Canterbury stuck to their game plan and remained composed, never allowing their opponents to gain full control.

Despite Jersey scoring four tries to Canterbury’s three, it was the accuracy from the tee that proved decisive. Two conversions and a last-kick penalty sealed a well-earned victory for the Black & Amber. A disciplined and determined performance saw the team return home with a well-deserved win.

Westcliff U18’s A 31 – 10 Colts Tigers: A hastily arranged Colts Tigers friendly saw a determined Canterbury side travel to face Essex champions Westcliffe with just 15 players. The Tigers started strong, trading early tries to sit level at 5-5 after 20 minutes. However, an injury left them down to 14, making the challenge even tougher.

Despite the setback, Canterbury battled on and trailed just 10-5 at halftime. Another injury early in the second half reduced them to 13 players, but the Tigers refused to back down, holding their own against a full-strength Westcliffe side. Only in the final 10 minutes did fatigue take its toll, with the hosts pulling away to secure a 31-10 win.

A superb effort from the squad, showing resilience and determination—valuable lessons learned for the crucial league games ahead!

Tonbridge U18’s B 42 – 12 Colts Dragons: Canterbury’s U17s, with an eye on next season’s 1st team, faced a formidable Tonbridge Juddians B side in a highly physical and intense contest. Under relentless pressure, Canterbury went into the break scoreless, trailing 24-0.

Despite the uphill battle, the team showed resilience in the second half, with Alex Sweetman and Michael Le Roux crossing the line for well-earned tries. Although the final score reflected a tough outing, there were plenty of positives, as many players stepped up physically. This match serves as a valuable reality check, highlighting the standards and intensity required for next season.

Sevenoaks Boys U15’s 10 – 31 Canterbury Boys U15’s: Canterbury U15s put in a dominant display to claim victory over Sevenoaks, running in five tries to two. Their defensive resilience was outstanding, particularly in the first half when they stood firm against a well-drilled opposition—despite playing 12 minutes with a man down due to a harsh yellow card.

Against the odds, Canterbury’s discipline, teamwork, and attacking flair proved too much for Sevenoaks, sealing a fantastic performance. Well done, Canterbury U15s!

Thank you for your continued support, and we look forward to another exciting year of rugby action!

The Archbishop’s & CRFC (ACE) Rugby Academy Girls shine in Kent 7s Debut

Since its inception, The ACE Rugby Academy has focused on providing a well-rounded education while instilling the core values of rugby—sportsmanship, respect, and competitiveness. This commitment took an exciting step forward as, for the first time, the ACE Academy fielded a girls’ team at the Kent 7s Tournament.

Despite the dismal weather en route to Dartford Grammar School, the squad’s spirits were high, and they were ready for the challenge. They certainly made an impact, losing only one group stage match before narrowly missing out in the semi-final, finishing third overall on points.

A fantastic debut performance, showcasing their technical ability, teamwork, and determination—this is a group to watch for the future!

Read on for all the latest match reports, club news, and upcoming events. #OneClub Weekend roundup

1st XV 23 – 46 Tonbridge Juddians: Canterbury put up a spirited fight against league leaders Tonbridge Juddians but ultimately fell short in a tough National 2 East encounter. An early Frank Reynolds penalty gave the city side a brief lead, but Juddians capitalised on Canterbury’s mistakes, with their hooker Will Colling scoring a hat-trick from driving mauls. Injuries to key players forced Canterbury into a reshuffle, but Reynolds’ kicking kept them in contention at 22-9 at half-time.

A resurgent Canterbury dominated the third quarter, closing the gap to six points with a well-finished try from Frank Morgan. However, handling errors and a strong Juddians defence prevented further scores. The visitors took full control in the final ten minutes, punishing Canterbury with three late tries. A last-minute effort from Sam Rogers, converted by Reynolds, provided some consolation, but the league leaders’ clinical finishing proved decisive.

Pilgrims 27 – 20 Beccehamians: Pilgrims avenged last season’s heavy defeat at Beccehamians with a determined 27-20 victory, keeping them top of Counties 1. Despite conceding an early converted try, they responded well with an Owain Collins penalty before Henry Kenny powered over for yet another try in his remarkable scoring streak. Collins added another penalty before Gus Lister finished a well-worked backs move, giving Pilgrims a 20-12 half-time lead.

A scrappy second half saw Beccehamians close the gap with a penalty, but Pilgrims sealed the win late on when prop Nathan Morris intercepted a loose pass to score under the posts. The home side managed a last-minute try for a losing bonus point, but Pilgrims’ solid defence and set-piece dominance ensured an important win. They now have a week off before facing local rivals Dover on 1st March.

Canons 46 – 22 Bromley 2nd: With five games remaining, the Canons knew victory was essential in their Counties 4 title push—and they delivered with a dominant finish against Bromley. Despite conceding an early try, they responded with a penalty and two first-half tries from captain Ben Jones and Will Rayner to lead 20-15 at the break.

Bromley fought back to take the lead in the second half, but the Canons stepped up in the final 15 minutes. Josh Lamb’s break restored their advantage before Harry Jackson and Vaughan Rothery added tries. Lamb then sealed the win with a superb second, latching onto Rayner’s pinpoint grubber.

With two tough away fixtures ahead, including a key clash against second-place Old Williamsonians, the Canons know their fate is in their hands.

Deacons 0 – 66 Sittingbourne 2nds: A depleted Deacons squad, bolstered by CCCU players, faced an experienced and well-drilled Sittingbourne side that started fast and capitalised on their cohesion. With several players out of position, it took a half to settle, but by then, a 33-point deficit left a mountain to climb.

Despite the challenges, the Deacons’ determination never wavered. Tom Smith impressed on his return from injury, Jasper Emmanuel shone in a new role at 12, and the team continued to test the opposition defence. Sittingbourne’s strong breakdown work limited scoring chances, but the Deacons controlled the second half, forcing mistakes and penalties.

Though the game ended 59-0, the squad’s resilience and discipline stood out. Captain Brad Nicholson earned POTM for his leadership, kicking, and defensive efforts.

Zingari 14 – 12 Old Gravesendians 2nds: In a fiercely contested match, the Zingari held on in the dying moments to secure a hard-fought victory. Gravesend started strongly, dominating early territory and scoring the opening try, but a quick response from Rob Horan brought Canterbury level. A well-worked try just before halftime gave the visitors a narrow five-point lead.

The second half saw both sides battle for control, with neither able to dominate in the set piece. As the game entered the final quarter, a series of Gravesend penalties allowed Henry Collins to power over the line, with Horan’s conversion giving the Zingari a slender two-point lead.

With time running out, Gravesend launched a relentless final attack, but Canterbury’s heroic defence held firm. A crucial clearance in injury time secured a dramatic and well-earned victory for the Zingari.

Boys U15’s 50 – 0 Chelmsford: Canterbury welcomed last year’s Essex champions for a friendly and showed exactly why they are the team to beat this season. From the opening whistle, the home side controlled the game, moving the ball with confidence and shutting down opposition attacks before they could develop.

Despite their reputation, the visitors struggled to match Canterbury’s pace and precision. An early lead set the tone, with well-worked goals adding to the scoreboard. Credit to the opposition for making the trip, but there was no doubt about the better side on the day.

A sharp attacking display, disciplined defence, and relentless energy made for a dominant performance—if this form continues, it promises to be a thrilling season ahead.

Colts 48 – 33 Club Atlético San Isidro: Canterbury Colts had the honour of hosting Argentinian touring team CASI in a last-minute fixture at the Simon Langton 4G on Wednesday. The match was played in three 30-minute periods, allowing all 45 players to take part in a highly competitive and entertaining evening of rugby.

CASI started strong, taking the first third 15-5, but Canterbury responded well in the second, matching their physicality to edge a 25-20 scoreline. In the final period, both teams fielded their strongest line-ups, with Canterbury dominating the set piece and proving too strong in attack despite CASI’s determined defence.

A fantastic evening of rugby, showcasing skill, resilience, and international camaraderie.

Colts Tigers 50 – 0 Deal Colts 1st XV: Canterbury Colts delivered a commanding performance on the Top Pitch, overpowering Deal Colts with an impressive display of running rugby. The home side ran in ten tries, leaving the visitors struggling to contain their relentless attack.

Freddie Philpott (2), Andrew Thomas, Bobby Noone, Josh AE, Eddie Coupe, Oscar Sands, Oli Harding, Charlie Roberts, and Oli Crowther all crossed the whitewash, with every try expertly converted by Oli Harding.

A dominant showing from start to finish, this was a statement performance from a confident Canterbury side.

Sidcup 1st XV 38 – 17 Colts Dragons: Canterbury Colts Dragons faced a challenging away fixture against a well-drilled Sidcup side, falling to a defeat in a fiercely contested match.

Despite flashes of quality and determined attacking play, Canterbury struggled to break through Sidcup’s resolute defence. Tries from Ryan Beerstrecher, Riley Soutan, and Gam Esan—who combined brilliantly with Cai Redmond for a slick chip-and-chase finish—showcased the Dragons’ attacking potential. Scrum-half Barney Smith controlled play well, while captain Piers Weigh led from the front, keeping the team focused until the final whistle.

Though the result didn’t go their way, the Dragons showed resilience and will take valuable lessons into their next fixture.

Thank you for your continued support, and we look forward to another exciting year of rugby action!

Around the Ground

Around the Ground at the MTG

It was a weekend of hard-fought battles and standout performances across all levels of Canterbury Rugby Club. The 1st XV came up just short in a closely contested 22-18 loss to Westcombe Park, while the Women’s team put in a determined display but fell 15-7 to Heathfield & Waldron.

There were plenty of positives elsewhere, with the Deacons delivering a dominant 76-0 victory over Vigo 2nds. In the junior ranks, the Boys U13’s Spitfires edged out Tonbridge Juddians 25-20, while the Hurricanes stormed to a 35-5 win over Bromley. The U16s narrowly lost 12-13 to Sevenoaks in a thriller, and the U14’s took on Dover winning 20 – 0.

Thank you for your continued support, and we look forward to another exciting weekend of rugby! Check out the upcoming fixtures below and come down to cheer on the teams.

A week of mixed results but plenty of positives for Canterbury Rugby Club!

Weekend roundup

Westcombe Park 22 – 18 1st XV: Canterbury’s six-match winning run came to a frustrating end in the muddy conditions at Westcombe Park, where despite dominating territory, they struggled to break down a resilient defence. A poor start saw them concede eight early points before Sam Rogers’ catch-and-drive try and a Frank Reynolds penalty brought them level. However, Combe struck again before half-time to take a 15-8 lead.

The hosts extended their advantage with a converted try in the second half, and despite Canterbury controlling territory, they couldn’t find a way through until Jamie Stephens powered over in the 63rd minute. A late Reynolds penalty secured a losing bonus point, but it wasn’t enough to prevent a disappointing 22-18 defeat.

Deacons 76 – 0 Vigo 2nds: After a tough defeat to Thanet last week, Deacons were determined to respond, and they did so in emphatic fashion with a dominant 72-0 victory over Vigo 2nds. A fast start saw the backs cross the line within 10 minutes, quickly followed by three more first-half tries, all converted by returning kicker Josh Lamb.

Despite losing a player to injury, Deacons upheld the spirit of the game, with Leon Benning stepping in to play for Vigo in the second half. Canterbury continued to apply pressure, running in try after try to seal their biggest win of the season.

Credit to Vigo for battling until the final whistle, and congratulations to Lennie “Westside” West, named Player of the Match!

Heathfield & Waldron Ladies 15 – 7 Canterbury Women: Canterbury Women put in a determined performance against league leaders Heathfield & Waldron but fell just short in tough conditions. Despite dominating at the breakdown and scoring a well-worked try, repeated penalties against us gave Heathfield the advantage. A second-half penalty extended their lead, and despite Canterbury’s relentless effort, the home defence held firm.

It was a hard-fought contest, highlighting the team’s resilience and strong defensive play. Plenty of positives to take forward as we look ahead to our next challenge!

Boys U13’s Spitfires 25 – 20 Tonbridge Juddians U13’s
Boys U13’s Hurricanes 35 – 5 Bromley U13’s
Boys U14’s 20 – 0 Dover
boys U16’s 12 – 13 Sevenoaks

Thank you for your continued support, and we look forward to another exciting year of rugby action!

The 1st XV secured their sixth consecutive win with a hard-fought 29-25 victory over Worthing, while Pilgrims staged a brilliant second-half comeback to beat Bromley 43-37 and stay top of Counties 1. The Canons won 29-12 against Kings College Hospital, but the Deacons fell to Thanet 3rds, 10-39.

A depleted Zingari side showed great fight against league leaders Gillingham but lost 36-21 after a late surge from the hosts.

In the youth section, the Boys U12 Black claimed a strong 40-10 win, while the U13 Spitfires drew 25-25. The Colts narrowly lost 33-38 in a tight contest.

A week of mixed results but plenty of positives for Canterbury Rugby Club!

Weekend roundup

Worthing 25 – 29 1st XV: Canterbury made it six wins in a row but were pushed hard by National 2 East’s bottom club, Worthing. The home side struck first through Harrison Dakin’s try from a driving maul, but Canterbury responded with two quick scores. Kurt Heatherley capitalized on a spilt cross-field kick, and Tom Williams weaved through the defense for a well-taken try, both converted by Frank Reynolds. Worthing hit back before halftime, leaving Canterbury with a narrow 14-10 lead at the break.

Despite losing Tom Best to a sin bin, Canterbury extended their lead with a try from Garry Jones and a Reynolds penalty. Worthing fought back with a stunning 80-metre interception try from Jack Forrest and another score from Tom Derrick, bringing them within touching distance of a shock win. However, Canterbury sealed the victory with a penalty try after Worthing’s Frank Taggart illegally stopped a maul. A late Worthing penalty secured them a second bonus point, but Canterbury held on for a hard-fought win.

Pilgrims 43 – 37 Bromley: Pilgrims faced a crucial test against Bromley, a side that had edged them out earlier in the season. Opting to play uphill in the first half, they found themselves trailing after an early Bromley penalty and a well-worked try. Pilgrims responded swiftly, with full-back Guy Hilton finishing off a well-linked attack, converted by Owain Collins. Bromley remained dangerous, adding another try before Pilgrims closed the gap through Jesse de Vries, who powered over from a scrum. However, Bromley struck twice before halftime, including a quick-thinking try from a fast lineout, giving them a 29-14 advantage at the break.

The second half saw Pilgrims’ resilience shine through. They added a penalty and a second Hilton try before a yellow card for Collins put them under pressure. Despite being a man down, Harry Chubb’s converted try gave them the lead. Further scores from Harvey Furneaux and Sonny Trew-Neville extended their advantage. Bromley fought back with a late try and penalty, but Pilgrims’ defense held firm to secure a 43-39 bonus point win. The victory keeps them top of Counties 1 with five games remaining.

Kings College Hospital 12 – 29 Canons
Deacons 10 – 39 Thanet 3rds

Gillingham 36 – 21 Zingari: A depleted Zingari side faced a formidable challenge against top-of-the-table Gillingham Anchorians, who sportingly matched numbers to ensure the game went ahead. The early exchanges saw Canterbury adjusting to unfamiliar positions, allowing Gillingham to capitalize with two converted tries in the opening 20 minutes. A fumbled ball near the Zingari line gifted the visitors a third score just before halftime, giving them a commanding 19-0 lead at the break.

Undeterred, Zingari came out with renewed energy in the second half, breaking through the Anchorians’ defense to score a converted try under the posts. Their increased intensity and dominant forward play soon led to another converted score, putting Gillingham under pressure. Although the visitors hit back with a try out wide, Zingari’s relentless efforts saw them cross for a third converted try, closing the gap to just three points.

As fatigue set in, Gillingham’s fresh legs proved the difference, with two late tries and a conversion securing their victory. Despite the result, Zingari displayed immense character and resilience, pushing the league leaders to the limit in a fiercely contested encounter.

Boys U12 Black 40 – 10 Old Elthamians U12

15 teams sporting Black & Amber last weekend, and another fantastic display of rugby spirit all round. A fifth consecutive win for the 1st XV, the Canons maintaining the top spot despite a tough hard-fought draw, the Deacons relentlessly battling in the face of a strong top of the table Ashford Barbarians team, and Zingari’s win against a tough Gravesend side. Our youth teams represented well, with our Girls U16 continuing to make good progress, Boys U15 remaining undefeated this season, and again, we fielded three Colts teams.

Next weekend is going to be a cracker!

Weekend roundup

Havant 5 – 61 1st XV: Canterbury extended their winning run to five games with a commanding nine-try performance against Havant, closing the gap on third-placed Dorking to just two points. Despite injuries forcing a reshuffled squad, the team displayed efficiency and flair, storming to a 30-0 halftime lead. Frank Reynolds’ early penalty was followed by tries from Kurt Heatherley, Garry Jones, Eoin O’Donoghue, and Sam Rogers.

Havant briefly rallied in the second half but struggled against Canterbury’s relentless attack. Further tries from Tyler Oliver, Tom Best, Tom Williams, Harvey Furneaux, and a late score from O’Donoghue sealed an emphatic victory, highlighting Canterbury’s depth and dominance.

Old Colfeians 2nds 19 – 19 Canons: The Canons were given a reality check as they battled to a 19-19 draw against Old Colfeians, reminding them that top spot in Counties 4 is no guarantee. Colfes started strong, scoring twice to take a 12-0 lead before Canterbury responded with a driving maul try before halftime.

A missed tackle allowed Colfes to extend their lead early in the second half, but the Canons fought back with tries from Will Rayner and captain Harry Nicholson, with conversions from Josh Lamb and Henry Carruthers leveling the score. Despite late momentum, Canterbury couldn’t find a winner, settling for a frustrating draw. They now turn their focus to next week’s clash against Kings College Hospital.

Deacons 5 – 41 Ashford Barbarians: Facing the top-of-the-table Barbarians, the Deacons put up a fierce fight despite a 5-41 defeat. A strong defensive effort and aggressive counter-attacks kept the visitors at bay early on, but Barbarians broke through with two first-half tries to lead 12-5 at the break.

The second half saw Barbarians’ class shine through, with quick tries and fortunate bounces extending their lead. Despite two disallowed tries, the Deacons kept pushing, challenging their opponents in open play and at the scrum.

Player of the Match: Oli Turton
Standout Player: Jadyn Moore
Honourable Mentions: The entire team—progress continues!

Zingari 34 – 24 Gravesend 4ths: Canterbury Zingari avenged their earlier defeat to Gravesend with a determined 19-17 victory. Despite conceding an early try, their relentless tackling nullified Gravesend’s powerful pack, allowing their backs to capitalize with two tries for a 12-5 halftime lead.

A quick second-half score extended Canterbury’s advantage, but an injury left them with 14 men for the final 20 minutes. Gravesend fought back with two late tries, but the Zingari’s earlier dominance ensured a well-earned win in a fiercely contested match.

Boys U12’s v Cranbrook: A fantastic display of rugby from our 43-strong U12 squad! With two Canterbury teams taking on two Cranbrook sides in back-to-back matches, every player had the chance to shine, with a minimum of half a game each.

An incredible effort from all involved, showcasing skill, teamwork, and the depth of talent in our young players.

Weekend roundup

Saturday 18th January

1st XV 24 – 15 Guernsey Raiders: Canterbury silenced any doubts about their post-holiday form with a hard-fought win in a tough National 2 East battle against Guernsey Raiders. Twice coming from behind, the city side delivered a resilient performance marked by solid defense and key second-half tries, securing a 24-15 victory.

The match opened with Frank Reynolds putting Canterbury ahead with a penalty, but Guernsey’s powerful maul produced a try for James Burger. A Charlie Simmonds penalty extended the Raiders’ lead, but just before halftime, Reynolds set up Garry Jones with a clever grubber kick for a converted try, giving Canterbury a narrow 10-8 edge at the break.

Guernsey struck back early in the second half with a well-executed try by Sam Boyland, converted by Simmonds, and Tyler Oliver’s yellow card added pressure on Canterbury. However, a composed Canterbury side turned the tide with a Kurt Heatherley cross kick initiating a sequence that sent Harvey Furneaux over the line. Reynolds converted to reclaim the lead.

The decisive moment came in the 65th minute when Jones, now at center, found a gap to score his second try, again converted by Reynolds. Despite a late surge from Guernsey, Canterbury’s tenacious defense held firm, securing the win and showcasing the team’s remarkable progress since their earlier season defeat to the Raiders.

Thank you to our sponsors Burgess Hodgson, CIO Investment Club, Maypole Marquees, On Architecture, and MMS 360 for your ongoing and invaluable support.

Deal & Betteshanger 15 – 54 Pilgrims:
Canterbury Pilgrims claimed a commanding 50-15 win over local rivals Deal & Betteshanger in the “Battle of the Bests,” with Tom Best outshining his brother Ollie.

Pilgrims started strongly, with Al Evans, Max Campbell, and Gus Lister among the first-half try scorers, giving them a 40-3 halftime lead. Owain Collins orchestrated attacks with precision, adding conversions and exploiting gaps in the defense.

Deal responded in the second half with two tries, but further scores from Campbell and Henry Kenny sealed the Pilgrims’ dominant performance. They now prepare for a crucial match against Bromley on February 1st.

Canons 102 – 5 Footscray: The Canons delivered a masterclass in rugby with a commanding win over Footscray. From the outset, their dominance was clear, with clinical execution and unrelenting teamwork setting the tone.

The forwards laid a strong foundation, driving Footscray back and enabling the backline to exploit gaps with sharp offloads and precise passing. By halftime, the Canons had stormed to a 50-point lead, combining offensive brilliance with a resolute defense that left Footscray with limited opportunities.

The second half saw the Canons maintain their intensity, with bench players seamlessly adding to the attack. The backs dazzled, delivering multiple tries with pace and agility. Despite their struggles, Footscray showed commendable spirit, earning a score that was warmly applauded by the crowd.

This emphatic win solidifies the Canons’ top-of-the-table position, highlighting their dominance and teamwork.

Maidstone 2nds 12 – 35 Deacons: The Deacons claimed a hard-fought win against Maidstone in a spirited match that showcased their discipline and flair. Despite an early Maidstone error leading to Craig Fuller’s opening try, the home side responded quickly, keeping the score close. Finn MacCabe broke the deadlock with a try and conversion before halftime, leaving Maidstone a man down due to mounting penalties.

The second half saw Maidstone intercept for a try, leveling the scores at 12-12. However, the Deacons regained control with a rolling maul finished by Jadyn Moore and a string of well-executed running plays that led to two tries from Johnnie Gaylor and another from debutant Ano Masaka.

Player of the Match went to Johnnie Gaylor, with the entire team earning praise for their effort. The Deacons continue to grow their entertaining style of rugby—new players are always welcome to join the journey!

But this triumph wasn’t just about the players. Everyone played a part – the amazing supporters who cheered them on, the sideline family and friends bringing energy and love, the incredible Canterbury Girls match day squad, and of course, legendary photographer, Ken Matcham, capturing the magic.

Have you checked if your children are eligible for a Child Trust?

If you have a child born between September 1st 2002 and January 2nd 2011, are you aware that a tax free savings account (Child Trust Fund – CTF) was set up for your child with funds deposited into it, depending on the child’s date of birth, and their family’s income. The idea was the long-term tax-free savings pot would go up in value by their 18th birthdays. BBC News recently reported “New figures suggest £1.4bn belonging to 728,000 people is ready to be claimed now they have turned 18 – but many do not know the accounts exist.”

There are numerous resources to find out more information. There is a GOV.UK webpage – https://www.gov.uk/child-trust-funds that breaks down all aspects of the CTF including how to find a Child Trust Fun. The Share Foundation – https://www.sharefound.org/ also offers resources to track down Trusts within the CTF Register.

If you are not aware of the CTF and have children born within the designated date range, it may be worth you taking a look. One recipient discovered she had £955 in a fund she wasn’t aware of – https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cjr82gejlxno

Last games roundup

21st December

1st XV 35 – 22 Sevenoaks: Canterbury secured a 33-20 win over Sevenoaks, cementing fourth place in National 2 East. Despite a narrow halftime deficit, they dominated the second half, scoring three of their five tries and controlling scrums and lineouts.

Eoin O’Donoghue and Tyler Oliver crossed in the first half, while Alfie Orris, Frank Morgan, and O’Donoghue added second-half tries. Frank Reynolds’ accurate kicking sealed the win. Sevenoaks managed a late consolation, but Canterbury’s clinical display ensured they ended 2023 on a high.

Ashford 3 – 76 Pilgrims: The Pilgrims delivered a commanding performance in their final game of 2024, defeating Ashford 76-3 to stay top of Counties Kent 1.

An early Owain Collins penalty set the tone, followed by tries from Harry Chubb, Gus Lister, Guy Hilton, and Max Campbell. Henry Kenny finished a flowing team move, and a powerful driving maul extended the lead to 46-0 at halftime.

The second half saw more attacking flair, with Yannick De Moubray scoring twice and converting one. Aggressive defense and set-piece dominance kept Ashford at bay, limiting them to a solitary penalty.

This comprehensive victory capped a successful year for the Pilgrims, showcasing their strength across the field.

Rye 7 – 12 Canons: The Canons wrapped up 2024 with a gritty 12-5 win against Rye on a windy Sussex coast. Herbie Bowler opened the scoring early, and Ben Jones added a second try just before halftime, giving Canterbury a 12-0 lead.

Playing into strong winds in the second half, the Canons delivered a resolute defensive performance, conceding just one try while withstanding sustained pressure. A final defensive stand on their 5m line sealed the win.

With 20 wins from 21 games in 2024, the Canons look to carry their momentum into the new year, starting against 3rd-placed Dartfordians on January 4th.

28th December

Canterbury & East Kent U23’s 12 – 27 Tonbridge Juddians & West Kent U23’s: On December 28th, the MTG hosted a thrilling U23s match as 34 Canterbury players, spanning five years of Colts teams, took the field alongside five current Colts stepping up to U23 rugby. Over 200 spectators enjoyed an entertaining encounter during the Christmas League break.

Canterbury started strongly uphill, showing physicality and dominant ball carrying, but TJs capitalized on opportunities to lead 12-0 after 20 minutes. A well-earned try by Kyle Oliff, converted by Owain Collins, brought Canterbury back to 12-7 before TJs struck again, closing the first half at 7-17.

With clear directives, a new Canterbury XV emerged for the second half but struggled against TJs’ sharp execution. Two quick tries and another in the 60th minute extended TJs’ lead to 27-7. Canterbury showcased their attacking flair late in the game, scoring a brilliant try in the corner to finish 12-27.

Congratulations to Adrian Geddes for being presented with a much-deserved Player of the Match award.

Despite the loss, Canterbury’s U23s displayed resilience and promise. Thanks to all involved for making the fixture possible. The next U23 match is against Sevenoaks on Sunday, April 13th, at the MTG.

Thank you for your continued support, and we look forward to another exciting year of rugby action!

Last weekend’s games

Dorking 34 – 35 1st XV: Canterbury claimed a hard-fought victory against Dorking, ending the home side’s unbeaten streak this season. The match came down to the final kick, with Dorking narrowly missing a conversion in the dying moments, allowing Canterbury to celebrate a well-earned win.

Head Coach Matt Corker praised the team’s performance, calling it “a big step forward” and crediting their aggressive breakdown play and sharp ball movement. Canterbury overcame an early setback to dominate much of the game, with standout contributions including Aiden Moss scoring in his 200th league appearance and Frank Reynolds adding three penalty goals and three conversions.

Despite a late surge from Dorking, Canterbury’s resilience and strategic play secured the victory, marking a memorable success at a challenging venue.

Sevenoaks 47 – 24 Pilgrims: The Pilgrims faced a challenging match against Sevenoaks, ultimately falling 47-24 despite moments of promising play.

The city side started brightly, dominating the opening exchanges with strong link-up play between forwards and backs. Their efforts were rewarded when prop Nathan Morris powered over for a try, converted by Will Hilton, giving them an early 0-7 lead. However, Sevenoaks responded with a flurry of four tries in 20 minutes, capitalizing on defensive lapses and a yellow card for Will Hunt, to establish a commanding 28-7 lead. Al Evans’ late first-half try brought some relief, making it 28-12 at halftime.

After the break, Sevenoaks added a fifth try, but the Pilgrims fought back, leveraging dominant scrums to score again and close the gap to 33-19. With momentum building and Oaks reduced to 14 players, the next score was pivotal. Unfortunately, a well-executed 50/22 and lineout drive saw Sevenoaks extend their lead to 40-19.

The Pilgrims secured a vital fourth try for a bonus point through Max Campbell, but a final Sevenoaks score sealed the 47-24 result. Despite the loss, the Pilgrims remain top of the Counties 1 table and will look to bounce back in a crucial match against local rivals Ashford this Saturday.

Canons 55 – 0 Sheppey: The Canons started the second half of their season in emphatic style, overpowering Sheppey at the MTG. With a well-executed game plan, they showcased both attacking flair and defensive discipline.

Debutant fly-half Josh Lamb opened the scoring with a solo break under the posts within five minutes. From the restart, Fady Sheta exploited space out wide to sprint 60m for a second try. The forwards laid a strong platform, enabling the backs to shine, with Jake Upward scoring twice before halftime to make it 24-0.

The highlight of the day came from Ben Jones, whose dazzling run and offload set up Jon Murphy for a memorable try under the posts. As Sheppey began to tire, Upward completed his hat trick, while further tries from Murphy, Harry Chubb, and Lamb sealed the comprehensive win.

The Canons now look to close the year on a high as they face Rye on December 21, aiming to strengthen their hold at the top of Counties 4.

Sheppey v Deacons: Cancelled
New Ash Green v Zingari:  Cancelled
Canterbury Women v Tonbridge Juddians Ladies: Cancelled

Hellfire 2 games to 1 Brighton Bucanneers: Hellfire emerged victorious in a fiercely contested 2024 Gill Laurie Cup tournament, showcasing resilience and determination against a strong Brighton side.

The opening game saw Hellfire narrowly edged out 13-16 despite a spirited fightback. Undeterred, they battled to a nail-biting 17-16 win in the second game, keeping the competition wide open.

In the deciding match, Hellfire’s composure and organization shone through. Under intense pressure from Brighton, they held firm to secure a 16-11 victory and claim the coveted cup.

A fantastic achievement for Hellfire, capping off an exhilarating tournament and 2024!

Thank you to Canterbury Christ Church University Sports Centre for allowing us to hold the tournament at their fantastic facility.

Tunbridge Wells 13 – 20 Colts 1st XV: Despite missing several key players to Kent U18s duty, injuries, and even skiing holidays, the Colts 1st XV rose to the challenge and clinched a hard-fought 13-20 victory against Tunbridge Wells in League 1.

The first half saw Canterbury struggle to capitalise on favourable conditions, with missed opportunities and last-minute errors keeping the score tight. Ruben Kalonji’s late try ensured Canterbury led 3-5 at the break, despite Tunbridge Wells opening the scoring with a penalty.

The second half, however, tested Canterbury’s resilience as the hosts capitalised on the wind and slope to take a 13-5 lead. A penalty from Oli Crowther narrowed the gap before Gam Esan’s electrifying touchline run brought Canterbury back into contention. Though the conversion slipped wide, Ed Thompson’s powerful try and Crowther’s successful kick sealed the win.

Strong defensive performances from Harrison Cook, Oscar Sands, and Piers Weigh’s key turnovers were instrumental in this gutsy away victory.

Boys U13 Spitfires 35 – 5 Blackheath: The Canterbury U13 Spitfires capped off their Division 1 Kent league campaign with a commanding victory over Blackheath at the MTG.

Despite conceding an early try straight from the kick off, Canterbury quickly responded with a score of their own just two minutes later, seizing control of the game.

While the set-piece battle was evenly matched, Canterbury’s speed, precision in moving the ball wide, and superior fitness at the breakdown proved decisive. Their dynamic play led to a series of fantastic tries, showcasing their attacking flair.

This comprehensive performance marked the Spitfires’ most dominant display of the season, providing a strong finish to their league campaign.

Boys U13 Hurricanes 20 – 20 Tonbridge Juddians: The Under 13s Hurricanes delivered an exhilarating performance in their latest match, battling to a 4-4 draw against Tonbridge in a contest filled with skill, determination, and sportsmanship.

The game began at a blistering pace, with both teams testing each other’s defences. Canterbury struck first with a well-executed try, but Tonbridge quickly levelled the score at 1-1. The second half saw both sides trading blows, with Canterbury taking a 2-1 lead only for Tonbridge to equalize at 2-2.

As the intensity grew, TJs edged ahead 2-3 before Canterbury responded to level the game at 3-3. In the closing moments, Tonbridge regained the lead, but Canterbury’s relentless determination saw them cross the line once more, ensuring the game ended in a well-deserved draw.

This hard-fought match highlighted the resilience and talent of both teams. Though neither side claimed victory, their efforts provided a thrilling spectacle and set the tone for more exciting matchups in the future.

Thank you for your continued support, and we look forward to another exciting weekend of rugby action!

Despite a stronger defensive effort from Quins after the break, Canterbury sealed the win with a fifth try in the 73rd minute, as Kurt Heatherley set up Alfie Orris to cross the line.

Faversham 19 – 39 Canons: In challenging wet and windy conditions, the Canons secured a hard-fought 40-21 victory over Faversham, a recently relegated Counties 3 side. Canterbury dominated from the start, using their pack’s power and pace out wide to control the game.

First-half tries from Guy Hilton and Harry Jackson (2) gave the Canons a 21-14 halftime lead, despite Faversham scoring twice. Playing downhill in the second half, Canterbury capitalized on the conditions. Simon Jaynes, playing against his former club, scored the bonus-point try, followed by a 22-meter breakaway try from Adrian Geddes and a seventh from Tom Halliday after excellent phase play.

Though Faversham grabbed a consolation try in the final play due to a lapse in concentration, the Canons’ commanding performance keeps them 8 points clear at the top of Counties 4, with 10 wins from 11 games. They look to maintain their form this weekend as they host Sheppey at the MTG.

With senior Colts leading each side, the teams showcased attacking flair, racking up 19 tries in a Super Rugby-style exhibition. Locked at 45-45 with 10 minutes to go, the Tigers broke through with an intercept try, followed by two quick scores to secure victory.
