Canons Match Report

It was close but no cigar for the Canons, as a try in the last 5 minutes led them to a one point defeat against Old Williamsonians.

Old Willies took control in the first 10 mins with slick passing and running threatening the Canons try line, however their only reward from the entire into the Canons 22 was a solitary penalty.

As the Canons settled into the game, they too started to threaten the Old Wills try line, with line breaks from Will Rayner and AJ Masaka helping to gain territory. However the only reward came from Old Wills infringements, with Liam Brownes boot taking the Canons to 6-3 lead at the break.

The second half started in the same way as the first, with the Canons absorbing Old Wills pressure, with the defensive line remaining resolute. A third penalty followed from Browne, and the Canons looked to take control of the game.
The Canons soon broke the try scoring deadlock, with Fady Sheta breaking down the left to release Freddie Philpott to score under the posts. The conversion hit the post, but the lead was stretched to 8 points.

Old Wills struck back with a try in the corner, to cut the deficit but the Canons still held the advantage. However old habits die hard, as the Canons gave away silly penalties to gift Old Wills field position. A well worked strike play from a centre field scrum led to an Old Wills try with 5 minutes to play, which was well converted by the fly half.
The Canons recovered the ball from the kick off, but despite threatening could not get into a position to snatch a late win, in an exciting and evenly matched game.

Pilgrims Match Report

Pilgrims 19

Old Reigatians 14

The Pilgrims welcomed the leagues bottom club old Reigatians to the MTG on Saturday, but although they were without a win in 16 league outings, their recent results suggest it won’t stay that way for long.
That was evidenced from the first whistle as they had the advantage of the slope and looked intent on running the ball at every opportunity. The pilgrims, having been inconsistent in recent games themselves, aided the visitors by looking to force offloads, missing kicks to touch and chatting back to the official. This coupled with Old Reigatians early dominance in the scrum put the pilgrims on the back foot and they soon found themselves a try down after Old Reigatians turned their possession in to 7 deserved points. The pilgrims spoke before hand about playing to their strengths and looking to move the ball wide and on the few occasions they did this it was no surprise to see Old R’s struggle to contain them, Campbell being narrowly denied in the corner before eventually the pilgrims found their way to the line with the ball moved wide effectively to even the score at 7-7.
A further score was added on the stroke of half time to give the pilgrims a narrow 12-7 lead.
The second half was a continuation of the first with the pilgrims disrupting their own rhythm by consistently failing to find touch from penalties, back chatting the referee and keeping the ball tight rather than playing expansively which has brought them 2 scores.
Both sides were muttering unnecessarily to the referee and he took a dim view of this- first sending wing Fin Mason-Myers and his opposite man to the bin a scuffle after the whistle, before scrum half Valladares was also yellow carded for back chat.
Old R’s took advantage to score their second and take the lead midway through the 2nd half and give the pilgrims a firm warning they needed to up their game. The forwards dug deep and started winning the collisions with more intent led in particular by McCormack and Dengate with the latter going on a powerful 40 meter run to the line that sore the pilgrims restore their lead, 19-14.
Old R’a tried to rally and showed they are not out of place at this level, but the pilgrims held firm to claim an important victory. Credit to Old Reigatians who will not remain winless if they continue to play with the same endeavour.

Late Kick In The Teeth

CANTERBURY 24 OLD ALBANIAN 27

by David Haigh

A last minute penalty goal saw league leaders Albanians snatch the win which kept their National 2 East title hopes firmly on track. At the end of a bruising and high quality game It was disappointment for a Canterbury side who first kept afloat through outstanding defence then picked up the pace so well they went ahead in the final quarter. The free flowing visitors domination of possession and territory in the first half tested the city side to the limit but their commitment and organIsation restricted Albanians to a miserly three point advantage at the break. Sam Jones kicked them into a seventh minute lead with a penalty goal but, despite their control, it took another twenty minutes before they found a try. A lineout drive and close quarter pounding ended in fly half Andy Nurse battling over the line. Jones added the conversion but two minutes later Canterbury, who at that point had barely sniffed an attack, hit back through a brilliant individual score from flanker Ryley Thomas. His powerful midfield break ended under the posts and Frank Reynolds converted. If Albanians were frustrated, they quickly made up for it at the start of he second half. A charged down kick gave them field position and the pressure was sustained to create a converted try for centre Steve Hiheta. It may have looked ominous for the city side but the mood soon changed and the momentum began to shift. Reynolds slotted a penalty goal and, for the first time, Canterbury began to pose threats which brought them two tries and a seven point lead. A penalty and drive set up the first for Cameron Macmillan and, on 66 minutes, the forwards did the spadework before Tom Williams fired the pass which sent Harry Sloan across the line. Reynolds converted both scores, taking him past the 1000 point mark in his career with the club, but the quick thinking visitors were always in the game. They caught Canterbury sleeping with a throw to the front of a lineout, Elliot McPhun touched down and Jones’ conversion brought his side level. Canterbury hung on but Jones’ accuracy killed off their hopes with that late penalty as they head into two more testing February games against leading sides.

Canterbury: K.Heatherley, F.Morgan, H.Sloan, W.Waddington, L.Talbot, F.Reynolds, P.Farrance, D.Huntley, E.O’Donoghue, O.Frostick, C.McGovern, J.Stephens, J.Walker, R.Thomas, T.Oliver. Replacements: J.De Vries, T.Williams, C.Macmillan, G.Lister, C.Oliver.

MATCH PREVIEW

In this game, if you’re five percent off mentally, you’re miles off on the scoreboard. I’ve said it before in this column — and Havant was another reminder. While we weren’t miles off on the scoreboard, we were miles off in terms of performance compared to the previous week against Dorking.
Our last defeat before that was away at Oundle on 8 November, so to go nearly three months unbeaten is real credit to the players for their hard work and the strides we’ve made in taking our game to the next level. Unfortunately, that doesn’t soften the disappointment.
After a poor start, scores either side of half-time brought us back into the contest and levelled things up with 38 minutes still to play. At that point, I fully expected us to kick on. Instead, errors and poor execution stopped us from taking control. We fell behind again, fought back to level terms, but if you give a good team in good form too many opportunities, you’ll eventually pay the price.
The positive is that we know exactly what needs fixing. After a week to recover some battered bodies, we welcome table-topping Old Albanians to the Marine Travel Ground. They’ve been outstanding all season, with just three defeats to their name. Although we scored five tries in the reverse fixture, it wasn’t enough for us to leave as winners. Containing their attacking threats will be crucial if we’re to come out on top this Saturday.
The Pilgrims are also back in action against Old Reigatians. To be truly safe and avoid a relegation play-off, we need to finish ninth — a position currently occupied by Bromley, one place and one point above us. With six games remaining, every point is vital, which makes Saturday a big one.
As we enter the business end of the season, this is exactly where we want to be — competing in meaningful games. Now it’s about producing our best rugby when it matters most.

In a fiercely contested and physical match against long‑standing rivals Old Dunstonians, the Spitfires delivered a performance that showcased everything that makes this group so special. From the first whistle to the last, the intensity, discipline and sheer determination on display were nothing short of outstanding.

Canterbury U16s Crowned Champions After Dominant 38–5 Victory

Canterbury U16s delivered a performance to remember this weekend, stepping onto the pitch with everything at stake,  and rising to the occasion in spectacular fashion. In a commanding 38–5 win over Tunbridge Wells, the squad didn’t just secure another result…

🏆 They sealed the 2026 Championship title. 🏆

From the opening whistle, Canterbury set the tone with relentless pressure, disciplined structure, and an intensity that Tunbridge Wells struggled to match. Every player contributed to a display filled with heart, grit, and composure far beyond their years.

By the time the final try was grounded, the scoreboard told the story: a dominant Canterbury side, muddy, exhausted, but smiling from ear to ear, the unmistakable look of champions.

A Triumph Months in the Making

This victory represents far more than 70 minutes of rugby excellence. It is the result of:

• Months of hard training

• Unwavering discipline and commitment

• A squad that plays for each other

• Dedicated coaches shaping and supporting development

• Parents and volunteers who make every match day possible

Together, this community built something special, and today, it all came to life on the pitch.

💛🖤 Congratulations to the Canterbury U16s: 2026 Champions!💛🖤

The scoring opened after 20 minutes when Alfie crossed for the first try, slinking through muddy hands as no one could bring him down,

setting the tone for the afternoon. Six minutes later Axel powered his way over, a try built on sheer strength, aggression and hand-offs that underlined the forwards’ intent. Isaac added the conversion at 27 minutes to extend the lead further.

This team has earned a moment they will carry with them forever. Their performance, their unity, and their spirit have set a standard for the club and created memories that will stay with players, coaches, and supporters alike.

Well done, Canterbury. What a journey. What a team. What a finish.

The Match Report:

This final Kent County League fixture of the U16 season came with everything on the line, with victory required to secure the Championship. The squad responded in emphatic fashion, producing a dominant all-round performance to close the campaign in style.

From there, the Canterbury backs began to shine. Oscar finished a sharp move at pace beating 3 attempted tacklers on 30 minutes, before Isaac followed it up with another conversion. The interplay, speed and precision in the wider channels caused constant problems for the opposition defence.
Early in the second half, Will D produced one of the standout moments of the match, finishing brilliantly in the corner. Hugging the touchline, he showed great pace and control to run it in under pressure.

Oscar then added his second try, continuing a strong attacking display with a great mix of strength and speed.

At 36–0, Happy crashed over for a superb try that perfectly summed up his game after Alex had crashed through the mainline toward the Try line — all power, aggression and refusal to be stopped. Isaac was again reliable from the tee, adding further conversions to keep the scoreboard ticking.

Although the opposition managed a late consolation score, it did nothing to take the shine off a commanding 38–5 victory.

A fitting performance in the final league game, securing the Kent County League Championship (back to back, as they were the U15 champions also) and marking an outstanding U16 season.
